About TOEFL

The TOEFL is designed to assess your ability to read, listen, speak, and write in English — skills you’ll need to succeed in a university classroom. It’s created and administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service) and is accepted by over 11,000 universities and institutions in more than 150 countries.

Format and sections:
The most common version of the test is the TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test). The test takes about 3 hours, and it’s divided into four main sections:

  • Reading:
You’ll read 3-4 academic passages and answer about 30-40 questions in roughly 54-72 minutes. This section checks how well you understand and analyze written material.

  • Listening:
You’ll listen to lectures and conversations, then answer around 28-39 questions over 41-57 minutes. It tests your ability to understand spoken English in academic contexts.

  • Speaking:
In this part, you’ll respond to 4 tasks in about 17 minutes. You’ll be asked to speak about familiar topics and also respond to material you’ve read or heard.

  • Writing:
There are 2 tasks to complete in 50 minutes. You’ll write an essay based on reading and listening tasks, and another essay expressing your opinion on a topic.

Scoring:
Each section is scored out of 30, leading to a total score between 0 and 120. Many universities have minimum TOEFL requirements, typically ranging from 80 to 100 for competitive programs.
