Global Leaders Scholarship

What is it?

We are offering £5,000* tuition fee reduction for our undergraduate courses or £4,500* tuition fee reduction for postgraduate courses.

Who can apply?

International students from eligible countries studying our on-campus undergraduate and postgraduate courses (excluding preparation courses such as foundation courses, EAP or pre-masters).

These discounts are available to new applicants for 2025/26 entry and those who have yet to make a deposit payment. Please note that certain courses are excluded from this offer. The discounts for these courses are as follows:

Alumni Loyalty Scheme

What is it?

20% waiver on the full cost of course fees to reward loyal alumni who return to study a postgraduate degree at the University.

Who can apply?

Alumni (graduates of the University) who enrol on a full or part-time postgraduate course (MA, MSc, LLM, MBA, Mphil, PhD, Dprof, DBA, EdD, or PhD by Existing or Creative Works) delivered at either of our Sunderland campuses starting between 1 August 2024 and 31 July 2025. International students in receipt of the Global Leaders Scholarship are not eligible for this discount.

How much will I get?

You’ll receive a 20% fee reduction.

How do I apply?

You do not need to apply for this scheme; if you are eligible, then you will automatically receive the discount.

When can I apply?

You do not need to apply. When you enrol onto your course, if you are eligible the award will be automatically applied.

Tuk-Tam Scholarship

What is it?

A scholarship that supports Bulgarian students to elevate their education with a Master's degree at a foreign university. They will then apply this knowledge in their home country.

Students can stay for up to 6 months after graduation for a placement/internship.

Who can apply?

Applicants must have Bulgarian citizenship and either a Bachelors or Master's degree. They must have applied for their chosen course at the University of Sunderland and show intention to pursue a career in Bulgaria.

How much will I get?

Up to £9,000.

Eligibility Criteria

Entry and Language Requirements

To pursue a degree at the University of Sunderland, applicants must meet the specific course entry requirements.

If English is not your first language, you’ll need to demonstrate proficiency through at least one of the following qualifications (or an equivalent):

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
    A minimum overall score of 6.0 is required, with at least 5.5 in each component: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)
    Any score above 180.

  • Cambridge Certification in Advanced English (CAE)
    A score no lower than 170.

  • O-Level or GCSE English Language
    Equivalent to a B2 (IELTS 6.0) or C1 (IELTS 7.0) level.

  • Malaysia CEFR (Common European Framework Reference)
    Grade 6 or above (only grades 1, 2, or 3 accepted for Law).

  • Degree or HND taught in English (for postgraduate students)
    Proof of qualification is required.

  • Trinity Integrated Skills in English (ISE) II
    Merit or Distinction needed.

Important:
Some courses may require a higher level of English. Check the course description carefully. After April 6, 2015, IELTS tests must be taken at a center listed on the UKVI website.

If you hold a different qualification or need guidance, the University’s International Office can advise you. They may also recommend taking an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) pre-sessional course before starting your main studies.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Pre-sessional Courses

The University of Sunderland offers a range of pre-sessional English courses designed to help students meet language requirements before starting their main academic program.

  • Course A
    For students with an IELTS or equivalent score of 4.0.
    Duration: 20 weeks, starting in April (for September or early October intakes) or May (for late October intakes).

  • Course B
    For students with an IELTS or equivalent score of 4.5.
    Duration: 15 weeks, starting in May (for September or early October intakes) or June (for late October intakes).

  • Course C
    For students with an IELTS or equivalent score of 5.0.
    Duration: 10 weeks, starting in June (for September or early October intakes) or July (for late October intakes).

  • Course D
    For students with an IELTS or equivalent score of 5.5.
    Duration: 5 weeks, starting in July (for September or early October intakes) or August (for late October intakes).
