US Introduces Stricter Rules for Int Students
The United States has announced a new set of stricter regulations for international students, tightening rules around duration of stay, course changes, and post-study options.

Under the new policy, international students will be allowed to remain in the U.S. for a maximum of four years, while those enrolled in language programs will be restricted to just 24 months.

Students will now be required to complete at least one year of study before changing their subject or institution. Postgraduate students, however, will not be permitted to switch courses. Additionally, students will only be allowed to progress to higher levels of education; moving to the same or lower study levels will no longer be an option.

The grace period following the completion of studies has also been cut in half, dropping from 60 days to just 30 days.

Extensions of stay will require timely applications supported by biometrics and credible reasons. Students with poor academic performance or those under suspension will not be eligible for extensions. However, students who can prove financial hardship may apply for an extension and will be allowed to work for up to 240 days while their applications are processed. Journalists and exchange program participants will also receive similar provisions.

Another major change is the restriction on repeating the same study level. Pursuing multiple diplomas or master’s degrees will no longer be permitted under the revised rules.

The new measures are expected to have a significant impact on international students planning to pursue education in the United States, particularly those who rely on flexibility in course selection or extensions to continue their studies.
